Pinpointing You Career Goals

Children are often asked what they want to be when they grow up - which is ironic, considering so many adults remain unsure how to answer. At young ages, people often don't have enough life experience to make the best career choices. Then, as people get older, getting the training needed to start new career paths may be logistically impossible or cost prohibitive. That's why it's so important to get it right as soon as possible, so that you can start making plans to reach that dream job. Here are some tips that can help you pinpoint your professional goals.

Current and Future Lifestyle

When you are considering your career goals, think about your current situation and where you would like to be in the near future. The near future is anywhere between one to five years from a short-term perspective. If you are satisfied with your current lifestyle, find ways to improve and build upon it. If you are not pleased with your current lifestyle, change things around so you can be pleased in your future situation.

Likes and Dislikes

The next thing you need to consider are your likes and dislikes. Think about the things you enjoy doing work-wise and the things you enjoy doing in your spare time. You should also consider activities you do not enjoy work-wise and in your spare time. If your career path allows you to obtain and enjoy the lifestyle you want, you are on the correct path. If things are not the way you intended and you are not able to live the lifestyle you want, you need to make the necessary adjustments whether they are minor or major.

Consider Your Passion

You may be passionate about many different things. The best way to distinguish which things you are the most passionate about is to think of specific events and how they made you feel. The times that you were the most energetic, happy and engaged is the situation you need to focus your career path upon.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Your strengths and weaknesses play a major role in your career path. One of the last things you want to do is set your career path around the things you do not enjoy doing. You should be happy in your career. When you are unhappy in your career, the career becomes a job and once this happens, things tend to go downhill. Your strengths are the things you are good at doing, such as working with your hands, having a way with numbers or something similar. Although many people do not like discussing them and it's a sensitive subject for most people, you need to acknowledge your weaknesses. There is nothing wrong with weaknesses because everyone has them. Once you acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, you can proceed with pinpointing your career goals.

Everyone's definition of success is unique. The key to success in this instance is to figure out what success is and what it means to you. This is where your personal goals are revealed and you can lay all of your flaws and strong suits on the table. One thing you should not be is afraid of success. Instead of being afraid, embrace it confront your challenges.

Long term career planning can be more challenging than short-term planning. When you are planning your career for long term success, you are not only planning for the near future but for the rest of your life. Long term career goals are ones you achieve over time and advance within your career. Long term career goals may include improving your personal and workplace skills or advancing within your company. One thing that will help you achieve your long term goals is writing them down and working toward one goal at a time until your list is complete.
