The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck available in regular-cab, crew-cab, and double-cab configurations. The 2020 model presents new trim levels and a newly designed engine. In addition to the previous engine options, the Sierra 1500 offers the upgraded Duramax turbocharged diesel inline-six option that has been planned for at least a year. It first appeared on the 2019 Sierra options sheet but was removed due to a delay in the certification process. This engine is different than other V6’s because it is a straight-six which also consumes more engine compartment room. However, these types of engines operate more smoothly and generate more torque. The Sierra HD (heavy duty) offers more powerful and extensive specs under the hood.

The Duramax on the regular GMC Sierra boasts power ratings of 277 hp with 460 lb.-ft of torque paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The regular Sierra can haul 1,000 pounds on its bed and tow close to 12,500 pounds which are perfect for everyday work. The 2500HD model hauls 1,500 pounds due to its 6L V8 engine and upgraded suspension. The towing capacity is 18,100 pounds which is ideal for extreme daily work requirements. The 3500HD is a monster with a bed that can carry one full ton due to the 6.6L turbo-diesel engine generating 445hp and 910 lb.-ft of torque. This powerful engine equates to a whopping 23,300 pounds of towing for those with heavy-duty work needs. Each model offers a smooth and seamless ride with little wind, tire, and engine noise.

Internally, all of the materials are soft-touch with several areas that pop texture and color. The seats are comfortable and can be purchased with ventilation and heating options. The dashboard and steering controls offer easy access and are simple to understand and manage, which is uncommon for big-truck interiors. The center console is large enough to fit a watermelon and the backseat can comfortably fit full-sized adults. There is a multitude of storage areas in clever compartments such as the rear seatback storage that has two compartments inside the seatbacks. The instrument panel has a storage tray designed for phones. The rear under-seat storage is plentiful as-is the lighted center console storage with lockable console vault. Furthermore, there is a large lower lockable glove box and unlocked upper glove box.

Light many other full-sized pickups in this class, there are multiple safety technologies such as Adaptive Cruise Control, IntelliBeam automatic headlamps, and Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone notifications. Other safety features include a Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist, Pedestrian Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Automatic Emergency Braking. One interesting feature is the Safety Alert Seat which causes the seat to vibrate for crash avoidance. Finally, the truck is integrated with Front and Rear Park Assist technology. To add a piece of mind, the Teen Drive innovation encourages better driving habits for teens by activating specific safety features and allows parents to set limits. After each ride, there is a vehicle report card for parents to access to aid in coaching.
