2017 Toyota Corolla: Fun & Economical

Economy cars can be sporty, versatile and dependable - and for proof, check out the 2017 Toyota Corolla. The Corolla has been around for decades and is known for being an affordable car that's fun to drive and smart for daily commuting. The new Corolla is largely unchanged from the previous model year, but there is a new S Special Edition trim package as well as several small styling updates. In addition, Corolla owners get improved Entune sound systems, and they get to enjoy the same top-tier gas mileage that makes this car so economical to drive. The new Corolla comes in four trim packages: the L, LE, LE Eco and S. The three more lucrative trim packages can be upgrade with the Plus and Premium bonus packages, and the new S Special Edition is a middle ground between the upgraded S Plus and S Premium trims. Read on to see our top 3 favorite trim packages for the 2017 Toyota Corolla.

Our first favorite package was the basic L package. While this trim isn't the most luxurious of the bunch - in fact, it's the most basic trim package available - that's why we picked it as our favorite. At its core, the Corolla is meant to be an affordable car that's comfortable and fun to drive, and that's reflected by the L trim package. This version of the Corolla comes with 15-inch steel wheels, power accessories, LED running lights and low-beam headlights, air-conditioning, a tilt and telescoping wheel and adjustable front seats. The six-speaker Entune audio CD system features a USB port, auxiliary audio, voice controls and controls on the steering wheel in addition to controls on a 6.1-inch in-dash touchscreen. While we'd love to see a rearview camera, that's a good array of features for such a high-quality affordable sedan.

Next on our list is the LE Plus package. This is where the Corolla starts getting a bit sportier. With this package, drivers get 16-inch alloy wheels and fog lights. More importantly, the LE Plus can be upgraded with the Driver Convenience Package, which includes keyless entry, keyless ignition and a sunroof. This trim package also gets navigation and apps built into its Entune audio system. The LE Plus package also gets the numerous features of the LE package, which includes heated mirrors, cruise control, a rearview camera, automatic climate control and a more stylish interior.

And our third-favorite package is the new S Special Edition. This exciting new Corolla trim package features 17-inch alloy wheels painted in a uniquely gloss black, rear disc brakes and improved suspension for better handling. The interior of the S Special Edition gets an all-black interior with red instrument panel and stitching accents. This package is upgradable with a sunroof and a premium Entune sound system.

The Corolla isn't going to blow anyone away with its power and performance. Each of the above Corolla packages gets a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out just 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. However, the Corolla's base package gets EPA ratings of 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the freeway, which is highly competitive in the entry-level sedan market. The new Corolla also earned top ratings in government crash tests. If you want an economy car that's stylish and dependable, then the 2017 Toyota Corolla with any of the above trim packages might be what you're looking for.
